Very, very cool! I found out about this product randomly while searching one of my favourite video sites. What an awesome concept! And a leftover box that’ll actually fit (properly) in my fridge without getting all banged up? Sign me up! This is also absolutely perfect for the don’t-want-to-do-dishes student or the whole--on-the-go connoisseur!

Environmentally Conscious Organization (e.c.o.), Incorporated is a design, licensing firm and manufacturing firm dedicated to improving outmoded, outdated and wasteful food packaging. e.c.o., Incorporated is marketing its first product, the Box (US Patent 7,051,919), a box manufactured from 100% recycled material. The top of the Box breaks down into convenient serving plates, eliminating the need for disposable plates. The bottom of the ‘ Box’ converts easily into a handy storage container, eliminating the need for plastic wrap, tin foil or plastic bags. The perforations and scores that create this functionality allow for easy disposal into a standard-sized recycling bin. Made from a standard blank, the Box requires no additional material or major redesign and can therefore be produced at no additional manufacturing cost. e.c.o., Incorporated owns the utility patent on the Box.

Video: Hi, I’m Bambi

Hi! Finally, an (sorry for the long wait). Today I went to visit Topia Greenstop for the first time. In this video I discuss my first impressions of Topia Greenstop, organic foods, and this morning’s crappy Tim Horton’s coffee.

The video player cuts off the video early, for some reason, but I assure you — it was only rambling from there! :)

More pictures and video from today to come soon!

How-to: Be green at work

greenatworkSo maybe you’re eco-friendly at home. You compost, you recycle… you know what you’re doing.

Alright, wise guy, what about at work? Huh? Sure, it’s not your home — that doesn’t been you can’t bring the same green attitude to work with you, does it?

In this article, I’ll give you some examples of ways you can change your bad habits in the workspace!

Bambi, allergies, and digestive health

generic_boxI’m very excited! Topia Greenstop has invited me to spend the day at their Real Café tomorrow. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures/videos and report back with my impressions.

I’m really looking forward to checking out their selection of preservative free .  Which reminds me — let me give you some background concerning my various digestive special needs. Oh, there are many.

I’ve been allergic to a handful of preservatives (such as benzoates, nitrates and sulfites)  since I was about 16 and it makes choosing at a grocery store quite a task.  If I choose wrong I could end up being very sick! Pre-bagged salad leaves me curled up in pain with cold sweat and nausea — talk about an day-ruiner.  And pre-mixed drinks like alcoholic coolers, lemonades, and iced tea? Same story. I’ve left many a backyard BBQ party early due to certain unnamed hard lemonades. *ahem*

On top of being allergic to these preservatives I, like my grandmother before me, have diverticulitis.  Diverticulitis is a digestive disease which – in layman’s terms – means that my body is creating little pouches in my intestines and deciding to store foods there that it has chosen to not digest. This may or may not prove to be a problem for me in my trials with organic . Whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables tend to hurt my stomach but my experience with them is limited to standard grocery store .

, however, pride themselves on natural, organic, and preservative-free — which is great for someone like me! I’m curious to see what a difference organic, preservative-free makes. Be sure to check back for my picture and tour of the store!

Did you know?…

laptop_skin_flowers_greenLaptops use 1/4 of the that desktops do?

If you – like me – are using a laptop for all your computing needs, go ahead and pat yourself on the back.  If you’re not — consider it! Laptops have lots of benefits: Portability, computing on the go… and now with netbooks being ultra portable and nearly weightless, you can pack your laptop in your purse or a small bag and bring it wherever you go!

I’m a freelance blogger so a lot of the work I do is from home, but that’s only a turn of phrase. I can work from wherever there is internet as long as I have my laptop with me.  A change of environment is great for inspiration!  I often work from shops and pubs.  And when the weather’s nice, nothing beats getting some work done from a patio in the sunshine with a cold ice tea in hand!

Spring clean your car!

car_for_web copyIn my pursuit for knowledge, I found some helpful hints to making your car a little more friendly — and saving some at the same time! Great bonus and a wonderful motivator.

Here are a few helpful tips:

1. Remove all bike racks, roof racks and roof boxes.
The wind resistance is wasting fuel and costing you . Remove them now!

2. Lighten the load.
What’s in the trunk of your car — a set of golf clubs? A four man tent? Why fuel using your car as a shed? Get them out and save more . Hey, maybe you’ll remember why they’re in there in the first place and use them! Just remember to take them out when you’re done. Those things are heavy and a big factor in your gas consumption.

3. Check your tire pressure.
Reduce the rolling resistance of your tires. It really does save you on gas! Don’t know how to check your tire pressure? Check out this helpful video link.

4. Share your car.
Cut your fuel bill in half by ride sharing/car pooling. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone else do the driving once in a while?

Now that the beautiful weather is here, why not walk or bike? Think about it. Is it entirely impossible? Even though I don’t drive, myself (I bus quite often), I’m considering walking more often simply to enjoy being outdoors more — get some fresh air!

Suzuki

Time to go , folks!

It’s Monday. I promised myself, and all of you, that I would really start this project today and I’m ready – and actually a bit excited – to give it a go!

What comes first? Well, I was thinking that doing some . I’d like to start by learning a bit about the efforts being made around the world right now would help me feel motivated. Motivation is a real factor here, for me;  how can I — just me – make a difference? Reading about others who have made a difference will drive me to keep going.

Who are your heroes? Do you know of any?

If you’re anything like me, the first thing that popped into your head was Green Lantern. I can assure you, Lantern never turned off his faucet when brushing his teeth or planted a tree to help create some space. Also, wasn’t he afraid of wood? I digress…

I don’t think I can name any one but David Suzuki… so I’m going to start there and see where my learning takes me.

I’m going to do some on some places to start in my effort to go and I’ll let you know of all of the interesting tips, , and motivating that I find.  Stay tuned!

Top 4: Saving water can save you money

pulsating_sc_jet_shower_headTo go alongside yesterday’s “Top 5: Saving energy can save you money” post, here are four awesome ways to by saving water! Let me tell you, as much as I love nice, long hot showers — I love saving money more, don’t you?

  1. Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
  2. Install a low-flow showerhead. They don’t cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
  3. Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.
  4. Plant drought-tolerant native in your . Many need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area.

Try these out for yourself! Have something you’d like to add to this list? Leave me a comment!
