Plant a tree for free
Hello Earthlings! (Heh, get it? It’s like I’m an alien but also… okay, nevermind.)
Today I was sent a link to the City of Ottawa TREE program:
The Trees, Reforestation and Environmental Enhancement (TREE) Program is a four year initiative that aims to enhance the City of Ottawa’s urban and rural forests through the planting of 100,000 trees between 2007 and 2010. The TREE Program empowers Ottawa residents, businesses, community groups and schools to participate in planting trees to enhance and maintain the city’s forest cover and combat climate change.
What a great idea! Ottawa gives away trees? And not just any trees — they’ve got Japanese lilacs, Serviceberry, Crabapple, Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Prospector Elm… so many kinds!
If you’re in the Ottawa area, be sure to register to get a tree. Delivery and pickup are both available. If you can’t think of somewhere on your property that you’d like to plant a tree, you can also recommend a spot for a tree to be planted.
Personally, I love the idea of trees that give me berries. Or trees that sprout beautiful pink flowers. I’m sold.
And don’t let not being in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada stop you — if there’s no program in your home town, start one! Or hey, easier than that — plant a tree of your own! It’s super easy and needs very little attention once it’s in and growing. Just don’t hit it with a lawn mower! (Sorry mom, I’ll replace it, I promise!)
