The ‘Star Wheel’ was created by Paul Cesewski and weighs 2000 pounds and stands 22 feet in the air. It took Mr. Cesewski 6 months and $7000 to put this together and unlike it’s carival counterpart, it requires no diesel engines to make it go!

So, how does this thing then? Well, there are three seats inside the middle of the wheel and each rider/driver peddles — the peddlers drive themself around the inside of the wheel causing the outside of the wheel to move forwards!

I read about this and immediately thought I would love to try this thing out… until I saw this video. Not so stable at all, huh? Maybe after a trip back to the drawing board this could be viable!

Simple Facts Monday: What is ‘precyling’?

precyclingThe socioverse has recently coined a new term — ‘precycling’ — but what does it really mean? Pre-, right? Like… using a product? Before… cycling? The sci-fi mind in me goes into questions involving , time and space, and DeLoreans.

But I’m crazy.

The real meaning behind precycling is much more forward thinking — towards waste reduction and making packaging that’s easier to recycle when the time comes. Precycling!

How can we precycle? Purchase products in bulk to reduce packaging, re-filling water bottles, re-using containers to store things, etc.), canvas shopping bags, online flyers and catalogues instead of ones — say no to junk mail!

And now you we know!

My beef with batteries

thumbnailThroughout this whole going green process I’ve noticed that I’m starting to question things that I never used to.

Take my Nintendo Wii, for example. It seems I’m always changing, charging, or losing batteries for the Wiimotes. Where’s the beef? Well, sure – I use rechargable batteries I’m not crazy! But aren’t there better options yet? This is 2009. I can power a disco ball with my usb port, but I’m still stuck with the same kind of clunky batteries that I used in my Sony Walkman in the early 80’s to play my Wham! cassettes. Lame.

So what do you think? Where are the alternatives, good readers?

bildeThat’s right! After some deeper digging, I managed to find a photo of Jesse James’ “Hydro-hell” hydrogen vehicle.

According to HydrogenCarsNow.com, Jesse plans to beat the current 186 mph record (held by BMW) by going a whopping 250 mph… in a car that he made himself! Well, repurposed. Still… crazy! I don’t think I’d trust anything I’d built enough to try and go as fast as humanly possible in it, but hey – I’m just a blogger, not a crazy-homemade-hydrogen-powered-car-with-cool-racing-stripes mechanic, right?

James has taken a Dees-Milodon Engineering-Davis B Streamliner that is over 40 years old and once raced at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a speed of 237 mph and repurposed the vehicle with hydrogen.

“The 10,000 psi gaseous H2 tanks come from Quantum Technologies and the engine is a modified Chevy 572 internal combustion engine with twin turbos. If Jesse James lives up to his outlaw name, good things will happen with this hydrogen racecar.”

I know I’ll be watching — I wish that more press were pushing this (though I hear the show isn’t very popular) cause I think that if he does actually beat this record, it could be great press for hydrogen cars! What do you think?

While the information is great, the presentation is… uhhh…. well, I’ll say this: Please, let me know if I ever get this crazy, would ya? Sometimes I get pretty excited about the green ideas and products I find, but I don’t want to be this guy? Is that mean? I’m sure he’s a very nice guy. I mean, look at the top hat! Right? This guy is all over with eco videos (musical and otherwise) and how-to videos.

But please, hear what he has to say — he makes some very good points!
